About AVIF and PNG

AVIF is one of the newest image formats — built on the AV1 video codec, it's extremely compression-efficient and supports transparency and high dynamic range. That efficiency is why sites are starting to serve images as .avif, and why one might land in your downloads folder unexpectedly.

The problem is that AVIF is so new that a lot of software still can't open it: older editors, most desktop viewers, plenty of chat and print tools. Converting to PNG gives you universal compatibility — PNG opens everywhere — while staying lossless and preserving any transparent background the AVIF carried.

One thing to know: decoding AVIF needs a modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Safari 16 and later). If your browser is up to date, conversion happens instantly on your device. The resulting PNG will be larger than the AVIF — that's the cost of a format every program can read.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open AVIF files?
AVIF is very new, so most desktop viewers, older editors, and many apps don't support it yet. Converting to PNG gives you a file that opens everywhere — universal compatibility with no quality loss.
Does PNG keep AVIF's transparency?
Yes. PNG supports an alpha channel, so any transparent areas in your AVIF stay transparent in the PNG. If your AVIF is a logo or icon with a see-through background, that background is preserved.
Why isn't my AVIF converting?
Decoding AVIF requires a modern browser — Chrome, Firefox, or Safari 16 or later. If conversion fails, update your browser, then try again. The decoding is handled by the browser itself, on your device.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Your browser decodes the AVIF and re-encodes a PNG on your own machine. Nothing is transmitted — you could pull your network cable out mid-conversion and it would still finish.
Will the PNG be larger than the AVIF?
Yes, often substantially. AVIF is one of the most compression-efficient formats there is, while PNG is lossless and uncompressed by comparison. The bigger file is the trade for a format every program can read.
Should I convert to JPG instead?
Choose JPG if you want the smallest file and don't need transparency. Choose PNG when the image has a transparent background or you want lossless quality for editing.
