When to choose PNG over JPG for WebP

WebP is Google's modern image format — compact and capable of holding a transparent background. The catch is that plenty of software still can't open it: older image editors, many desktop viewers, some print and chat apps. Converting to PNG makes the image work everywhere, and unlike JPG, PNG keeps everything WebP could.

The key reason to pick PNG over JPG here is transparency. If your WebP is a logo, icon, or sticker with a see-through background, JPG would flatten that to white — PNG preserves the alpha channel exactly. PNG is also lossless, so it's the right choice when you plan to edit the image in Photoshop, Figma, or similar without compounding compression artifacts.

The trade-off is file size. A PNG will be noticeably larger than the WebP it came from — WebP is simply more compression-efficient. For photographic images you only need to view or share in older software, webp-to-jpg gives a smaller file; choose PNG when you need transparency or lossless quality for editing.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert WebP to PNG instead of JPG?
PNG keeps transparency and is lossless. If your WebP has a transparent background (logos, icons, stickers) or you plan to edit it, PNG preserves everything. JPG would flatten transparency to white and re-compress the image. Pick JPG only when you want the smallest file and don't need transparency.
Does PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. PNG supports an alpha channel, so transparent areas in your WebP stay transparent in the PNG — ideal for logos and icons you'll layer over other backgrounds.
Will the PNG be larger than the WebP?
Yes, often several times larger. WebP is far more compression-efficient than PNG. The bigger file is the cost of lossless quality and universal compatibility — if size matters more than transparency, convert to JPG instead.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The WebP is decoded and re-encoded as PNG locally, preserving transparency. The image never leaves your machine.
Will the PNG look better than the WebP?
Not better — identical. PNG preserves the exact decoded pixels from the WebP. Any quality that was already lost when the WebP was created can't be recovered; converting to PNG locks in the current state without further loss.
Does this work for animated WebP?
It converts the first frame only. PNG isn't an animation format — for animated WebP you'd need a dedicated video or GIF tool.
